Ingredients
- 1 lb beef sirloin or flank steak, thinly sliced
- 5 tbsp soy sauce (divided)
- 1 tbsp cornstarch (plus an additional for the sauce)
- 1 tbsp rice vinegar
- 1 tsp sesame oil
- 1 tbsp oyster sauce
- 1 tbsp hoisin sauce
- 2 tsp sugar
- ½ cup water or beef broth
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil, divided
- 1 red bell pepper, sliced
- 1 green bell pepper, sliced
- 1 yellow onion, sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- Optional: grated ginger and chopped green onions for garnish
Instructions
- Marinate the Beef: In a bowl, mix the beef with 2 tablespoons soy sauce, cornstarch, rice vinegar, and sesame oil. Let it marinate for at least 15 minutes.
- Prepare the Sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together the remaining soy sauce (3 tablespoons), oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, sugar, cornstarch, and water or broth. Set aside.
- Cook the Beef: Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large skillet over high heat. Add the marinated beef in one layer and cook until browned (about 2–3 minutes per side). Remove from skillet and set aside.
- Stir-Fry Vegetables: In the same skillet, add the remaining tablespoon of oil and stir-fry the bell peppers and onion for about 3–4 minutes until tender-crisp. Add garlic (and ginger if using) for an additional 30 seconds.
- Combine Everything: Return beef to skillet; pour in the prepared sauce. Stir well and cook until thickened (about 2–3 minutes).
- Serve Hot: Garnish with green onions before serving over steamed rice or noodles.
